damn it! I just had to change my cell number because of unknown callers. I know it was knida my fault but i learned to be careful with my number. I'll defanatly be careful with this new number. Don't you hate people that call your cell nonstop? I told them to stop but they don't quit. man i hate that. i'll make sure that prick never gets my new number.

Hate that too. And don't you hate when callers call asking for an unknown person and you tell them they have the wrong number and then they call back cussing you out proving you up and down that you're wrong?

and then there are those mexicans who can't read numbers, and hardly know any english, so my mom has a hard time just telling them they have the wrong number. thats with a retgular phone. they haven't called in a bit, but when they do, you say helo in english, and they start jabbering at you in spanish. I'd feel like saying, or yeling wrong number in spanish, if i were the one who answered, if i knew how to say it. My mom pointed out they'd just start jabbering something back in spanish and i wouldn't understand them, but i'd just keep hanging up after saying wrong number.

well i wasn't irresponsible. it was just that i gave the wrong people my old number.

It's going to be okay Wonder Woman, take a deep breath and relax. Why do you call all spanish speakers Mexicans? Salvadorians, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans all speak spanish and these groups aren't from Mexico. Next time, when this happens to you, just tell "those Mexicans" that they have the wrong number: "numero equivocado". Hope this helps.

Post 7 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Saturday, 27-Jan-2007 19:23:45

thanks raskolnikov, I'll try that if i answer the phone and it's one of them. we just always assume they're mexican, guess they could be other spanish speaking people, maybe i should call them spaniards, that includes all, puerto ricans, latin americans etcetera. I just hope I say it right if it comes down to where i have to say it. I'm sure jaws didn't say it correctly.

alot of times when some 1 calls for a person I will pretend to be the person that they are looking for. And I love telamarketers After about 5 minnits they get fairly frustraited with me and don't feel the need to call back

Post 9 by sandrita87 (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 28-Jan-2007 17:35:46

wonderwoman, how do you know that those people can't read numbers? From what you're saying I get the impression that you assume that just because someone is hispanic and diles the wrong number then they don't know how to read.

Post 10 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 28-Jan-2007 20:56:52

sandreda, I just meant they couldn't read numbers in english, because they'd keep calling back, time after time after time. they've finally stopped calling, but they use to call quite often, and my mom had to say, you, have, the, wrong, number, very very slowly about 4 or 5 times. I'm sure they could read numbers if they were in spanish, just not in english.

*smiles* Actually, wonderwoman, numbers are the same in Spanish as they are in English. there is a difference in words but not in actual numbers. Maybe they couldn't understand English though. Your mom can say it as slowly or clearly as she feels she needs to, but it doesn't mean they'll understand anything she is saying. It would be like someone who only knows English, going to another country where they spoke only Spanish or another language, and that's what I think was happening with those people. But they probably got the hint after awhile, after figuring out they weren't reaching who they wanted to speak to.

As for me, I used to get calls frome "unknown", "private", and "out-of-area" callers when I had my home phone line. So since I didn't want to deal with that, I would have a short but friendly greeting, put it on the fewest rings, and let the answering machine get it. My phone has that talking caller ID feature, so that helped with some of the people I talked to so sometimes I could answer their calls and save them from having to leave a message, but otherwise if it said those phrases I mentioned at the beginning, I would not pick it up until they were leaving a message and not at all with telemarketers. But if I had a non-talking phone, I would do the same thing with that as well, with putting it on the fewest rings and not picking up until I knew by the voice/message who was calling.

tela marketers are fun. We talk for hours before I say well by the way I am not interested.

Post 14 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Monday, 29-Jan-2007 10:41:32

With my cell phone, I haven't gotten anything from telemarketers so far, only from people who have dialed the wrong number, which I don't mind explaining to them that they got the wrong number. So no big problems with that. Oh, and I forgot to mention, the thing that gets to me is, when I had my regular phone line, there used to be calls at all sorts of times where it would just beap. They were not individually long beaps, but it would last for maybe a minute or a little less, and it wasn't like there was any other sounds in the background or any talking throughout those messages. Those calls were very annoying for me because they would happen often and there was not much of a way for me to know where they were coming from, as the beaping would go on whether or not I picked up the phone. That was weird but yeah, those annoyed me even more than the telemarketers did because at least I know who was calling.

Post 15 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Monday, 29-Jan-2007 10:54:38

That's cool. At least you are nice enough to have a conversation with them, even though they're trying to sell you something you're not interested in. I don't know of many people that would do that. *smile* My nephew (who was 9 or 10 at the time) had once picked up my phone and it turned out to be one of those recordings, and he pressed the appropriate button to talk to a representative, not knowing what it was about but just following the machine's instructions. Anyway, it took us to some jazz music, which he wanted to listen to because he liked it, but I hung up after about 10 seconds because I was afraid that if he talked to a person, he might give them personal information they didn't need to have, as he is a pretty polite and friendly kid. So that's my nephew's almost-encounter with telemarketers. I can't say I've had any interesting/memorable experiences with talking with them though except for this one time that I thing I had written about in another discussion.

Post 16 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 29-Jan-2007 19:15:12

lol tinkerbell, your nephew sounds like someone who likes to talk, like i did when i was a kid, well i still love to talk, but I think it's different when you get older, I mean as someone and i were talking about, you have to make sense when you get older, but when you're 4 or 5 years old, nobody expects you to make any sense at all, lol. Anyway, I don't mind telling someone they have the wrong number, but sometimes they just can't accept it or believe they dialed the wrong number, and sometimes they cal back a few minutes later.I'm a firm believer in if the answering machine will do it, why not let it, but since we don't get quite as many telemarketers as we use to when we called that number to have it taken off their lists, she always says people don'tlike talking to a machine. Well, I say, it's our phone, our answeringmachine, so we can reserve the right to let the machine answer it first. people get annoyed when your answering machine comes on but sometimes when you call them, their answering machine answers. its like you're suppose to be at people's beck and call when ever they decide they want you. I use to have a message on mine saying, we can not come to the phone at this time, leave your message after the tone, if you are a telemarketer, please don't call this number again. one telemarketer got so mad, he said, we'll keep calling back til we get through, thankk you. but he never did get through, because we never answered them, lol.

I hate when telemarketers or salespersons call to like sell something and then when you tell them you're not interested, they'll say, well sir... or Ma'am, we have this very special offer we'd like you to try and I'm like I'm, not, interested. And then they say but sir, or ma'am, this is a very good offer I just say click right in their ears.

Post 18 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2007 0:21:27

they have recordings now, for a while, we weregetting recorded messages saying we'd been approved for a free satelite system, and one wanting us to come and hear about getting started owning your own business, there was no gimmic, you don't pay anything up front so leave your credit cards at home, yeah right. We don't get those right now, but we still get calls from charities wanting us to donate money.

I'm awfully rude with telemarketers -- usually what I do is that I let them talk for a few seconds and I just hang up on them with out saying anything. Besides, they can't call you back!

I thought they could always call you back, we use to get a lot of them.

Those damn telemarketers! Isn't there a way to delete your number from their computers? haven't gotten anything like that on my cell phone before and I hope I never do

I let them do their thing then I'll act like I'm interested and when they think they have a deal with me I just hang up lol.

Well, I let the answering machine answer the phone and if it is someone who I want to talk to, I pick it up. I started being nice, but it just keeps getting worse. My advice is to have your number non-published. Hopefully, this will help.

i got a call from someone the other day who had asked for one of my parents. When i asked if I could take a message, they just said, "No, I'll try calling back later. It's just a curtesy call." curtesy call, my arse, Would talking caller ID read the number if someone like that called my house again?

Post 26 by audioadict (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 07-Aug-2007 5:09:07

I've got calls that said this is not a sales call. Low and behold, it was. I don't even know what they mean by curticy call.

The calls I don't like are when I get a call on my cell phone, and I don't recognize the number. I got those strange calls and I don't like them I think they are telemarketers since these calls have been after business hours, and if it was a business call, they'd leave a voicemail. I hate those calls!

Post 30 by Miss Prism (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Saturday, 25-Aug-2007 2:37:57

Ooh, I get calls every damned day from bill collectors who are looking for people who I don't know. I've had my number for over a year, why am I still getting these calls?! I've tried putting my name on my voicemail, and that doesn't help.

As for telemarketers, if you're in the U.S. you can add your number to the do not call list, and that should help. I never hear from them, anymore. I'm pretty sure the UK has a similar thing, but I can't remember what it's called.

Does this list also apply to cell phones? That's where these calls are to.

One thing I just hate is when someone calls my cell phone, and they have the wrong number. I get those calls all the time. Now, I'd just say, Get yourself a dang phonebook! I don't have time to answer your calls, and I have to pay for the calls, so just never call me again!

Post 33 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Wednesday, 17-Oct-2007 16:01:20

I usually get calls from car dealerships and doctors offices asking for people I don't know. One left a number on my voice mail saying they dialed a certain number but. It was so similar to mine that they kept forgeting the last 3 digits. How could you not forget the last 3 digits of a phone number.

Post 34 by soaring eagle (flying high again!) on Thursday, 18-Oct-2007 8:35:55

I hate the calls that get on your answering machine and just keep going on and on. Computer dialing is a pain in the ass!
